Mulberry mojito

Mojitos are my favorite drink, hands-down. They are light, fresh-tasting, a little fizzy, a little sweet but not too sweet, and they can have so many variations!

Several years ago I posted a recipe for Coconut Mojitos sweetened with Agave Syrup, and it is still one of my favorite drinks to mix at home.

And now I am back with a Mulberry Mojito recipe! I absolutely love fresh mulberries when I can find them - they are amazing in mulberry iced tea, for making easy mulberry danishes, healthy mulberry muffins, and for making mulberry syrup.... so why not use this delicious berry to make mojitos?!

This mojito gets its stunning color from fresh mulberries. This fruity drink tastes is very light and refreshing, and perfect for sipping on a hot summer night.

If you have never had mulberries or don't know where to find them, you can read more about them in my Mulberry Danishes recipe - I wrote down everything I know about mulberries there, so I won't repeat myself here.

Unfortunately mulberries can be hard to find, you can absolutely make this mojito with blackberries or blueberries. Just follow the same exact instructions and you'll end up with a gorgeous, delicious, fruity, fresh blackberry or blueberry mojito.

A few tips on how to make mojitos:

  • You'll need a a mojito muddler. Well, not need need, but it makes it a heck of a lot easier than mashing mint leaves with a fork. You use the muddler to mash up mint leaves and release their fragrant and tasty mint juices and oils. You also mix the sugar into the mint leaves, and this helps break up and dissolve the sugar, and in turn the sugar bruises the mint leaves and helps them release their juices. A muddler also makes it much easier to muddle limes and release all the fragrant lime oils from the rind. They're cheap, they're fun to use, and they're actually really great for making guacamole and smashed chickpea recipes. So invest in a mojito muddler (such as this one) if you don't have one yet.
  • You can use club soda, seltzer, or sprite, depending on how sweet you like your drinks. I usually stick with club soda. You can use sprite and try skipping the sugar muddling step.
  • You can use almost any kind of sweetener you want for mojitos. White sugar is the traditional sugar used. Brown sugar will give your mojitos a lovely slight molasses flavor. Syrups such as agave or honey also add their own flavor to your mojitos.
  • You can also use any kind of rum for your mojitos: a light rum is typically used for the classic mojito, but a brown rum, spiced rum, or flavored rum would work just as well, depending on what kind of mojito you are making. Here's a good introduction to rum if you are curious.
  • Play around with different fruits and berries to make different flavor mojitos. You can use fresh or frozen fruit to muddle into your mojito, or you can add frozen fruit concentrates or fruit pulp. Goya makes a lot of great tropical fruit pulps that you'll find in the freezer section of your grocery store, so it's easy to try many different flavors.

We made this today from a mulberry tree we found growing in our yard! We used lime juice, mulberries, fresh mint and fresca with a teaspoon of sugar, no alcohol. We both liked it and will make again

Finally got around to make these tonight. I was out of mulberries, used them all to make jam, so I used 1 T. of jam instead, yum! My daughter and I enjoyed them while binge-watching our show on Netflix. Thanks for a great recipe!
