As I mentioned last week, I have 3 main goals for myself after reading this book:
- Lose weight. This is more about health and energy for me, and less about looks.
- Have more energy. I find myself not wanting to run around with my toddler son because I am always tired. Not out of shape physically, just plain tired.
- Be more mindful about when and what I am eating. There are times when I am craving something and don’t really know what it is. Or sometimes I eat a large, satisfying meal and then I am hungry again an hour later, craving something again.
That’s not how I want to be as I am getting older and nearing my 40s.
How this book is helping me meet my goals
Immediately after reading this book I started being more mindful about what I am eating.
I realized that I always eat breakfast first thing in the morning out of habit, not because I am hungry. Mostly because I always thought “if I don’t eat breakfast now, I’ll be STARVING by noon.”
But why not wait to eat breakfast until I was actually hungry? Or instead of a full breakfast, have a small snack later in the morning followed by a healthy lunch?
Reading about how intermittent fasting (IF) doesn’t have to be 18 hours of starvation was life-changing. Intermittent fasting can be 12-14 hours. Joel Marion says “as long as you’re fasting for at least 12 hours, you’re still within range of the health-improving and fat-burning results created by IF.”
Honestly, the word “fasting” sounds more harsh than it really is. I now eat a small breakfast after 10am, and there are days when I can absolutely skip it.
This is all thanks to a healthy, filling, balanced snack that I have in the evening.
Just like that, I am intermittent fasting.
This has made me more mindful about when I eat, why I am eating, and of course – what I am eating.
As a result, I am down 3 lbs the first week and I haven’t even fully immersed myself in the program yet. Of course, everyone’s results may vary.
