What are hot cocoa bombs and how do they work?
Hot cocoa bombs are chocolate candy molds filled with hot chocolate mix and any other hot chocolate add-ins, such as Marshmallows or other meltable candy and flavors.
To use hot cocoa bombs, just place one in a mug and pour hot milk over the chocolate candy. The chocolate shell will melt, revealing hot chocolate mix (along with the other add-ins) that you will sitr into the hot milk to enjoy a delicious hot chocolate treat.
It's a fun way to enjoy hot chocolate, a fun gift to give, and a fun activity to prepare these treats.
These make great gifts because they:
- Are inexpensive to make (just 4 ingredients!)
- Bring a smile to EVERYONE's face
- Are homemade, and people just feel the love that goes into homemade gifts!
Ready to get started??
Here's what you need:
Ingredients:
- 2 cups chocolate candy melts (or chocolate chips that melt well)
- 1-2 cups hot chocolate mix: you will probably use only about ¾ cups - 1 cup hot chocolate mix, but I still recommend using a bin or bulk container of hot cocoa mix (such as this) so it's easy to scoop, instead of trying to scoop out hot cocoa mix from individual single-serving packages. Or try a dark chocolate hot cocoa mix!
- 2 cups mini marshmallows
- 4 Twix candies (individual sticks)
You will also need:
- Hot cocoa bomb molds
- A piping bag or zip lock bag (optional, but helpful!)

Hot cocoa bomb molds
Ahh, the elusive hot cocoa bomb molds. They are sold out EVERYWHERE! Ideally, you should use a large silicone candy mold, such as this one. Each mold should be about 2-2.5 inches in diameter, so you can fit in lots of hot cocoa mix, marshmallows, and other add-ins inside the mold. Besides, the larger the mold, the more meltable chocolate shell you get in your hot cocoa. 🙂
If you can only find smaller ones, that is OK too, you might just need to count on using two hot chocolate bombs per cup of cocoa (depending on how chocolatey you like your cocoa).
However, if you can't find ANY silicone candy molds, you can use bath bomb molds, such as these!! They are just a little trickier to use because they are not flexible so you can't pop the hot cocoa bombs out, but they still work just fine, as you can see. Just make sure you follow the steps and allow these hot cocoa bombs to cool completely in the freezer, so they pop out easier!
The trick to using metal molds is to stand them up in a muffin tin so they don't get knocked over by accident.
If all else fails and you can't find ANY molds, you can make these in paper or foil muffin tin liners, sort of like giant Reese's cups filled with hot cocoa!
How to make hot cocoa bombs:
Step 1: Roughly chop 2 of your Twix candies. Cut the other two into 6 small sections. Set aside.
Step 2: Place chocolate candy melts in a microwave-safe bowl and melt in the microwave per the directions on the package, typically for about 2 minutes in 30-second increments. Stir well.
Step 3: Place 1 tablespoon melted chocolate into one half of a bomb mold. Use the bottom of your tablespoon measuring spoon to press the chocolate up the sides of the mold, keeping it thick but even. Add more melted chocolate, if needed. The thicker the layer of chocolate, the stronger the shell will be (plus you get more chocolate in your hot cocoa!). Repeat with 12 bomb mold halves.
Step 4: Place the chocolate filled bomb molds into the freezer for 5 minutes. This is key for making it easy to remove the chocolate from the molds! Remove molds from the freezer and gently tap the sides of the mold, gently pressing on one side of the chocolate to make the chocolate slide out of the mold.
Step 5: Fill 6 of the chocolate mold halves with 1-2 tablespoons hot chocolate mix, 1 tablespoon chopped Twix, and 6-8 mini marshmallows.
Step 6: To glue the chocolate shells together and form a sphere, you have two options. I prefer option 2.
Option 1) Heat a plate or a flat-bottom bowl in the microwave until the surface of the plate is warm to the touch. Press one of the empty chocolate mold halves open side down onto the flat portion of the warm plate for about 10 seconds. This will gently melt the rim of the chocolate cup.
Option 2) Transfer the melted chocolate to a piping bag or zip lock bag and use the melted chocolate as "glue" around the edges of the filled cocoa bombs. I find that this makes the stronger bond.
Step 7: Immediately press an empty chocolate cup to the top of one of the filled cups. This will join the two halves of the hot cocoa bomb.
Step 8: Transfer the remaining melted chocolate to a piping bag (or a zip lock bag) - if you haven't already, or use a fork. Using a piping bag or a fork, place a large dab (about a teaspoon) of the remaining chocolate candy melts on top of the assembled hot cocoa bombs then immediately follow by placing an additional piece of Twix on this chocolate dab.
Step 9: Place the hot cocoa bombs into the freezer for 5 minutes to get them to set, then remove and store in an airtight container until you’re ready to use.
Step 10: To use the hot cocoa bombs, place them in a mug and pour 1 cup hot milk over the top. Stir until the hot cocoa bombs are completely melted and enjoy!
Hot cocoa bomb add-ins and other flavors
I have a lot of ideas for hot chocolate bomb flavors in my other hot cocoa bomb recipe, but here are a few other ideas you can use in place of Twix:
- Caramels or caramel Hershey's kisses
- Peppermint Hershey's kisses
- Reese's peanut butter cups
- Hot cocoa Kisses (how perfect are these?? To be honest you can probably just stir a few of these into a cup of hot milk and call it a day!!)
You can also decorate these hot cocoa bombs with extra chocolate drizzle, or use melted white chocolate or different color candy melts to add colorful drizzles!
However you decide to make these hot cocoa bombs, I would LOVE to see a picture! Please take a picture and tag me on INSTAGRAM or FACEBOOK. You can find me at @babaganoshblog on both. I love seeing your creations!
